Robert Peter Maximilian Williams voit le jour le 13 février 1974 en Angleterre. Ses parents divorcent alors que le bambin n'a que 4 ans. Peter, son père, est un comédien qui exerce sous le pseudonyme de Peter Conway. Sa mère, Jan, après s'être occupée de la carrière de Robbie pendant son adolescence, a repris sa profession de fleuriste.

La carrière de Robbie commence lorsque sa mère découpe une annonce dans la presse; un producteur de chanson cherche une dernière recrue pour finaliser la formation de son groupe. Le jeune Robbie est contacté pour tenter sa chance lors du casting. Son aspect enjoué et sa prestation captent l'intérêt des 4 membres et du producteur. C'est ainsi que Robbie Williams fait son entrée dans le boys band Take That.


Robbie Williams est un acteur engagé pour les bonnes causes. Originaire d'une banlieue ouvrière, il n'a jamais été ingrat même s'il estime ne pas faire assez par manque de temps. Il a sa propre fondation Give It Sum qui a pour but le redressement de sa région, il est à l'affiche d'une campagne Unicef au côté de son ami et footballeur David Beckham. En 2004, il fait partie de la troupe du Band Aid 20 (20 ans après le premier Band Aid) pour la reprise du titre Do they know it's Christmas time at all et faisait également partie des artistes qui se sont produits sur la scène de Londres (Hyde Park) en 2005. Robbie a toujours, et ce depuis son plus jeune âge, été passionné par le foot. Il est, à l'heure actuelle, l'actionnaire majoritaire du club de foot "Port Vale" qu'il soutient depuis toujours. Cette même passion l'amena à diriger l'équipe anglaise du match caritatif Soccer Aid 2006. En dehors de cela, Robbie a souvent répondu présent pour un grand nombre de manifestations solidaires.

La carrière de Robbie Williams débute en 1991 avec le boys band Take That.

Malgré le succès (huit titres classés numéro 1 au Royaume-Uni), Williams ne s'adapte pas au reste du groupe. Il adopte un style "canaille" qui tranche avec l'image de gentil garçon qui lui est associée et veut afficher un côté rebelle à la manière de Liam et Noel Gallagher du groupe Oasis. Il lui est alors demandé de quitter le groupe le 16 février 1995. Pour casser son image de popstar, il décide de rejoindre les frères Gallagher sur la scène du festival rock de Glastonbury. La rencontre entre Robbie et les superstars de la britpop fait la une des journaux. Robbie devient un proche du groupe et tombe vite dans une spirale de drogues et d'alcool. Robbie attend que Noel Gallagher lui passe des chansons pour le démarrage d'une carrière solo mais rien ne se fera.

Il s'ensuit une longue bataille avec la drogue et l'alcool durant laquelle il prend rapidement jusqu'à 16 kilos et apparaît souvent en public dans un état lamentable.


Le 26 juin 1996, Williams entame sa carrière solo avec la reprise de Freedom de George Michael. Après une cure de désintoxication, il sort un second single en 1997, Old Before I Die. Ces deux titres furent classés numéro 2 au Royaume-Uni et préparent le terrain à son premier album solo Life thru a Lens, qui reçoit malgré tout un accueil mitigé. Elton John l'a malgré tout récemment décrit comme la plus grande star dans le monde.
